What will
you meet?
The trail runs along the walls of a narrow gorge, following its natural course. In addition to the massi erratici (glacial erratics), the boulders that give this forest its name, the route is distinguished by winding larch wood stairways which make it possible to climb the steepest sections. It also features a large reclining bench for lying down and looking up at the tree canopy. This Section ends at the track leading to the mystical Hermitage of San Silvestro.
Details route
This forest is full of sensory stimuli, ideal for education experiences for children.
The final part of the trail features a small forest of very tall fir trees, where a large bench invites visitors to lie back and listen in silence to the sound of the wind, immersed in the scent of resin.
Along the road leading to the Hermitage, visitors will find this fountain which once supplied water to the inhabitants of Collepino. Legend has it that the water from this fountain has a prodigious ability to bring back milk to women who have recently given birth. Until a few years ago, women whose milk had returned after drinking its water used to leave the bonnets of their newborn babies in the church of the Hermitage.
The Abbey was founded in 523 by SaintBenedict, its importance grew until it had jurisdiction over the entire Spello area and some churches in Spoleto, Foligno and Perugia. The small church within it features a crypt with three columns from Roman times and the altar is made from a Roman sarcophagus.
