What will
you meet?
This entirely downhill Section leads to Spello passing through forests, clearings, tall mounds of stones and, finally, olive groves. It holds an important place in the local and cross-regional trail network since most of the path also forms part of the Via di Francesco and the Sentiero degli Ulivi. The landscape is the common thread that accompanies visitors, whose gaze ranges from Perugia to Spoleto on the plain all the way to the Martani Mountains and Umbro-Marchigian Apennines.
Details route
This part of the Section features large areas with big piles of stone chips, partly created by the action of the winter ice which shatters the stones. However, these places were also used by the Romans, to quarry materials for building ‘Hispellum’, squaring the rocks in situ.
Saint Francis’ quote about this lovely view: I have never seen anything more beautiful than my Spoleto Valley.
In 2018, the 40+ kilometres of the Assisi-Spoleto olive belt was designated an FAO Globally Important AgriculturalHeritage Site, being a unique landscape.
The view of Spello is the just reward for finishing the more naturalistic part of the Loop.
